An Unexpected Community of Explorers
Interestingly, after sharing bits of discovery with friends and online communities, I realized such stories do not end at my doorstep alone; it is a general story shared by many. Indeed, secret rooms, forgotten attics, and hidden basements in old houses occur regularly. Old diaries and dusty musical instruments have surfaced from nearly all of these secret areas, as have long-forgotten toys, old jewelry, and hidden safes.
It is this sense of community that makes me believe we are, in a way, custodians of the past. Whether it is a childhood toy or some kind of mysterious artifact found in an old house, everyone carries a piece of history with him to connect those who came before him to himself. There is magic hidden in these artifacts-a sort of magic that brings people together and aids in appreciating the beauty of life’s fleeting moments.
