The dog went back, not understanding what was going on. Pain he had expected, maybe even loss-but this? He let out a whimper, one full of confusion and fear. Were they his? Had he birthed monsters or miracles?

The puppies began to wriggle and squirm, just like any other newborns, pulsating softly with rhythmic bursts of light that matched their heartbeats. Slowly, instinct took over. He lowered his nose and sniffed them one by one. No matter how alien they looked, they smelled like family. His first fear began to dissolve and was replaced by something warmer: a need to protect these fragile beings.
