The Day of Moving: Goodbye Silent
On the day he moved his father to the nursing home, Mark forced himself to be optimistic by thinking that Thomas would now be more comfortable and taken care of. However, as they loaded up his father’s belongings and drove away from the house, Mark felt the weight of the moment pressing down on him. His father was silent the entire ride home. This was more oppressive than any protest could have been in words. Thomas never said a word, but it was impossible to ignore the sadness in his eyes. He seemed to know that the move marked the end of a chapter in both their lives.

When they arrived at the nursing home, Mark helped Thomas get settled into his new room. He said he’d come by often, but the words sounded false even as he said them. He knew that to be true because life had a tendency to interrupt, and he wouldn’t see him as often as he’d like. That day, leaving the nursing home, washed over him a wave of guilt. He let himself believe things were better now; less complicated. But the hole in his stomach had another message.
