The Role of First Responders in Animal Rescues
Besides battling fires, firefighters have played an important role, especially in animal rescues, considering their important role, for all it seems, in areas where people interact more often with wild animals. Whether it is a bear cub lost in a forest, a bird stuck in a chimney, or a family of deer trapped in a flooded area, firefighters are the first line of defense in animal rescue missions. Many of them are trained in animal behavior and possess equipment specifically designed for animal handling.

The team that rescued the bear cub was no exception. Each member of the rescue crew had been trained on the techniques of rescuing animals and was indeed very conversant with how to handle wildlife: They know how to gently touch the cub so that it is not scared away, how to handle the cub in such a way that it is not stressed, and how to ensure the safety of the cub while transporting it. It was not only their firefighting skills, but also their tenderness and insight into how delicate the situation was handling a scared, wild animal that made this rescue work.
In addition, emotional attraction between the bear cub and its rescuers after the incident proved that one should remain clam and composed during an emergency. The composure of the firefighters helped to ensure that the cub was not further traumatized by the situation. The rescue reflected the valuable function of first responders in their capacities as heroic savers of life and, also, as sensitive caregivers at times of animal stress. Through this incident, the larger community was made to realize how much effort goes into these rescues and how important such compassionate professionals are to the safety of wildlife.
