Local governments play an important role in managing the interaction of humans with wildlife. As people move into the natural habitat of wildlife, local governments must ensure policies and strategies are in place to both protect wildlife and ensure public safety. The strategies employed are usually through wildlife monitoring, habitat preservation, and community education programs. For instance, in areas where bears frequent suburban areas, the local government may implement particular plans such as bear-proof trash cans and public education programs aimed at convincing people to avoid potential food sources of bears.
Governments can also team up with wildlife agencies as well as environmental organizations to formulate sustainable long-term relationships between humans and animals.
